Wedding Memories

What are the special keepsakes from your wedding?  Photos, the top of the cake, a wedding garter? I was asked to create eight of my bridal cuffs and a ring bearer pillow for a bride which will become a keepsake for her and her attendants on this special day.

It's such a joy to work on this type of project. As I stitched I thought about other weddings and how special the memories are and will always be.

I would be happy to create heirlooms like this for your wedding....

oh they're beautiful, Rose. I had a posy of fresh freesias on the top of my cake (which I made myself!) so I pressed them between the pages of our wedding album. After 31 years I'm not sure what's faded most, the blooms or the amateur photos - but we're still well and truly married!

Thanks Heather! and what flavor was that cake??? I love freesia...the scent is amazing! and what counts most is that you are still together.

So beautiful and so special! What an honor for you to have been asked to create them. Your gorgeous work has become woven into their special day and will be cherished for years to come. That's truly an honor:)

Rose, it's strange to be asked "what flavour?". 30 years ago ALL British wedding cakes were rich fruit cakes, same as our Christmas cakes, and covered in royal icing. I molded fondant roses for decoration too - about 100 of them I think! Nowadays wedding cakes can be less traditional, but back then I don't think anyone strayed from "normal"!!

Heather, well that is interesting that wedding cakes were fruit cakes. I wonder, and I'll probably be looking this up, if that was true for the original wedding cakes here in the US. And, if so....when it changed.

we must stop meeting like this ;-)

The tradition continues - the cakes are made in tiers, usually 3. The top and smallest tier is supposed to be kept to be reused as the christening cake for the firstborn. No fear of being mouldy, the cakes have brandy dripped into them periodically during storage, they're usually made months in advance.

We also have the tradition of saving the top tier, in the freezer. But the couple is suppose to share it on their first anniversary. Boy, that top tier with brandy could become pretty lethal....lol
