The Story of Lucky

A few weeks ago I was sitting in my studio and saw something bright and yellow fly past the patio doors. I got up to see what it was. To my amazement it was a parakeet. (mostly amazing because of what I had been thinking about just the night before) My first thought was that it was one of the many wild parakeets that fly around the valley. I've never seen one before, but I know that they exist. Looking out the door I saw that it had landed on a light fixture that we haven't installed yet. I went over to my work table and picked up my camera, luckily the zoom lens was on. I started taking pictures from inside the house. It didn't fly away, so I put the camera down and went outside. I began talking to the bird and inching my way closer. It allowed me to get up right next to it.

I happened to glance into our family room and realized my husband was watching this as well. I placed my forefinger against the parakeets chest and he didn't fly away, but also didn't step up on my finger. The bird seemed pretty tame and it was then that I decided to capture him. Well my first attempt was not successful and he flew over to our patio table. I picked up a towel and was going to throw it over him, but I wasn't fast enough. My husband came out at that point and we saw that he had flown up on our patio roof. We waited. He next flew down into the grass in our back yard. Being the kind husband that he is, he grabbed my towel and crawled across the lawn, slowly to the bird who was nibbling away at stuff in the grass. Getting closer and closer the bird didn't appear to be spooked, so my husband threw the towel over him and gathered him up.

We have two other birds. A parakeet and a cockatiel. One of our parakeets died last fall, so the other one has been alone for a while. Interestingly just the night before I was thinking about this parakeet and how it was alone. But wasn't sure I wanted to start the viscous cycle of getting another parakeet to replace the one who had died. I didn't like that our parakeet was lonely but I was trying to be reasonable.

Reasonable or not, fate stepped in and brought Lucky to our door.

Do you think he misses being free?

Well probably not right now with the temperatures so high. He has a pal, fresh food and water each day. But I'm sure he does miss stretching his wings.

Oh, he's so bright and pretty! He must have been someone's pet who got loose. No wild bird would let you just walk up to him. Glad your other bird has a companion now :)

Wow! It is always amazing to me how an unseen hand often comes in and brings lives together... even parakeets. Lucky is a beauty. I hope he's doing well.

Cindy...I agree and was so amazed that it happened the way that it did.

I think he may have gotten away from a pet shop, since there are a few in the area.
