Best Root Beer, Oprah, Storms and Prison Break

Last Saturday I woke up thinking about root beer. I had heard that the best was in Kingman, Arizona. We live in Phoenix, so it is about 2 hours away.

Not only the best root beer, but per Oprah the best hamburgers and onion rings! I asked D if he was interested in taking a long drive for lunch. He was completely "in." Not only for lunch, but the possibility of driving through interesting weather.

If you live in Arizona you understand. Thunderstorms and the rainy smell of Mesquite. We drove through a few storms on the way there, but nothing that was really exciting.

We got to Kingman and found Mr. D'z. The parking lot was pretty full and when we walked in it was busy. We were able to sit down immediately and we ordered hamburgers and onion rings. Even though I had my camera right there...I totally forgot to take a picture of my food! Yes, it was that good.

Now on to the root beer.... I can't even explain to you how good it is! It is served in a frosted mug and you get free refills! The owner created a recipe that includes a caramel flavor that makes it smooth and rich. We brought six bottles home and I dare D to drink even one of them! Really....I'm not kidding about this. (D if you are reading this...i mean it!)

....this is the first time we have ever been to Kingman. I wake up thinking about rootbeer, we drive to Kingman. On the way, D says, "did you hear there was a prison break in Arizona," I say, "no, where?" (there are several prisons here) He says, "I don't know." Then we go on about our day. After lunch I'm using my iphone for more driving directions and weather maps, since we have to find some really awesome weather. At the top of the screen it says, "Arizona Prison Break." I take note that it still doesn't say where.

We finally found the perfect storm....

We get home, turn on the late local news. Kingman. That's where the prison break happened just that morning.

What a great diner! Love the sign. It's so fun to scout out places that especially spur of the moment.

Well worth the possibility of running into an escape!

OMG I love trying different root beers too. Gourmet root beers, fancy bottled root beers, kegged root beers. I loved you story. It was fascinating, right down to the scary prison break, lol.

This place looks so familiar! Not the sign, necessarily (it has probably changed, at some point), but the diner. Now, if you can tell me where I once got amazing date shakes, every once in awhile, I think of them & wish I had one! Glad you escaped the commotion of the prison escape!

PD...me too! We even brought home a 4 pack from Ouray Colorado that I had never had before. Love it too...but the one at Mr Dz...my oh my!

Sam, I don't know how long ago you were at the diner, but this place has been around "forever." The pictures on the wall look like they go back to the 50s.

The prison break...it was weird. Even though we were all over Kingman that day there was no sign that something like that had happened there. No talk in the diner....no cop cars.

Love diners! And an icy cold root beer in a frosted mug sounds wonderful to me! Glad you enjoyed your lunchtime adventure and that it didn't include escapees!

Well if I let D have his way we would be storm chasers!!! I love storms, but don't think I want to be close to the eye either! Birch beer, I've never heard of that....will look for now!

Fun day! We opt for Stewart's rootbeer up north. it's the best alternative!

looks like a neat place, and my DH loves root beer. Have to remember this, the next time we go through Arizona... not that often - we usually heading to Albuquerque or Boulder...

Rose, you and hubby have the cutest yellow offroad truck. It appears as it's always ready to take Ms. Rose wherever Ms. Rose wants to go.

I love the nostalgic look of that cafe.

"Good looking" storm. LOL

...oh, and of all the soft drinks that I like, root beer gets a total -000 in my book. Can't stand the stuff. Glad that you get joy from it. You dared him, huh. You two have such a romantic marriage.
