Oh how I miss these wonderful, herald of warm summer night bugs!
Thoughts going back to being a kid and catching them just before bedtime in a mason jar. Punching holes in the lid, adding a little bit of long grass and carrying them to my bedroom. Setting that jar on the night table. Then getting the PJs on, turning off all of the lights and laying there watching them light up the jar.
So many nights of falling asleep with these simple pleasures to dream about...

I used to do the jar of lightning bugs near my bed at night. I do admit when I was little, I would take off the bottom half of them and rub the glowy stuff on me. Well, the big boys were doning it, so I went along. I miss those too. I wonder why AZ doesn't have them? They seem to like heat? I wish we could import them!
I used to do the same thing when I was a kid in NJ! We have them here in TN too. They just showed their glowing selves a couple of weeks ago. Right now, it's getting dark outside and they're all over the place. Takes me right back to my childhood.
Love the photo!!
We don't have them here in Arizona...no chance of seeing them unless I visit back east!
I lived very briefly where there were lightning bugs --they are really magical. Thanks for the photo--I've never actually seen what they look like in daylight!
i miss them, too. and your post from a couple years ago popped up - i recognized the photo ...Skyline chili! my husband is from just outside there, i went to college & lived there for years! we LOVE SKyline (so that's an understatement). did you know you can have it delivered? :)
No lightning bugs in AZ? Pity! Maybe you could put some tiny Christmas lights in a jar and pretend. ;)
I always thought the best part was catching them. I had one light up right in front of my face last night. It's that time of year!
Alex, YES! I love skyline chili. They deliver out here?
Treasure...oh I loved catching them as well...and it was so easy, since they were everywhere!
We grew up in Nebraska ~ Did the lightning bug and jar thing every summer ~ so much fun!! We do have them in Virginia, just not near as many ~ at least where we are!
