I see discussion about Twitter twittering everywhere. I haven't even looked at the website because of fear! There are only so many hours in my day and it seems that I am finding less time to create things. I am a huge proponent of marketing and planning. I even wrote an article over the summer about the benefits of many of the different marketing methods available to us today. But Twitter is something that I haven't delved into. It's like that spooky house on the corner that your friends dared you to ring the doorbell. If you didn't get away fast enough it may suck you in...
On that note I came across an article that was written by Sarah Milstein a web 2.0 consultant entitled, "How Twitter Can Help at Work." She wrote this article for The New York Times blog in a column called "Shifting Careers," where tips and advice are provided for small business owners. I happen to have two small businesses. One that is going strong and my creative entity that I hope to grow.
She provides five examples on how to utilize twitter and who is taking advantage of this new marketing tool. Anything from sharing ideas and knowledge to building your brand and providing excellent customer service. There are links galore to places like O'Reilly Media, Zappos, Jetblue, and Comcast all companies who are exploring this marketing medium.
I suggest that you read this article and then make your decision whether this is a good markting method for you. Yes, it does take time; however, it may be a better idea then one that you are currently using.
Now I'm going to go ring that doorbell...I'll let you know what happens when I get sucked in.

Great Article!
You know i love Twitter!
yes, I'm afraid of twitter also. But I joined. When someone on the etsy thread says, "I'll try to reach her through Twitter" I thought, HOW? I shouldn't have another window open all the time, should I? Oh dear... Thanks for the link.
I've gone over to the dark side and I'm now a twitter. Don't know what it will accomplish - but it's kind of fun.
This is a great post. Dont be so hesitant. Also, I would like you to think about the way that "you" would use twitter. If your using it the same way as Jet Blue, Zappo's and the like chances are it will not work. Join the community, find like minded folks and engage in conversation. It's not what you know, it's who you know. You can find my post on twitter on www.chrisbrogan.com . Hope this helps.
@keithburtis on twitter :)
I feel the same way - too much time marketing and networking - not enough creating. I'll be interested to see how it works for you. Good luck!
Forgive me for the wrong name on the above posting - it is corrected here.
Just received two requests from friends THIS WEEK to follow them on Twitter. Your post reflects my hesitance exactly. Am interested to read what you think after getting into it a bit.
I haven't tried it either. Good luck! It seems that quite a bit of people do use it. I be watching what you do. I'm going to read the article. Great to share1
I signed up long ago only to fall in only after an etsy friend started 'following' my empty account. It can take up as little or as much time as you like...nothing like yet another potential addiction.
Twitter is a big mystery to me too. But I have used it as a marketing tool - I tweet each time I list something, or write a blog. And I'm actually having a "Tweeters Only" sale today in my shop.
im on twitter but i only just now
(after reading this) wonder why? i've just been posting random nothingness about eating stuff and doing...stuff, hmmm
I'll have to read that article now!
I will read the articles also. I went there when I first heard about Twitter, but I did not get into it right away. But now I think I will check it out. Ding Dong.
Your post is like the 8th post I read about Twitter today. I too am very fearful about joining though. I can't keep up with the networks I'm currently part of. I'll join when the hype cools down.
I twitter too. I have mine linked through another account so when I update my status there it updates twitter also.
Can't wait to see your follow up report :)
I am a new 'twitterer' and am finding it a fantastic marketing tool - for others as i've bought 4 items from twitterers links in two days! So it was good for them! I'm following like-minded people and hoping that maybe someone will buy from me as a result of one of my tweets too! interestingly I ended up at your blog through a twitter link which led to a blog which led to you!
Thank you for posting this. I found it very helpful!
I am not ready to ring that twitter bell. I spend too much time marketing and networking, reading blogs, working on my website, etc. - not enough time on the creating part. The last thing I need in one more thing to check or update. Let us know how it goes.
Great article! I've also not been ready to ring the twitter bell because of the time commitment involved, but your article is making me think twice.
